3 High Altitude Thrills — Colorado Attractions at the Royal Gorge Bridge and Park

Calling all adrenaline junkies!Extreme Colorado Attractions

The Royal Gorge Bridge has been around since 1929, and in 2003, the Royal Gorge Bridge introduced a free-falling attraction, where visitors were able to swing out over the edge of the gorge 1,200 feet above the Arkansas River — talk about an adrenaline rush.

We know you love activities that get your blood pumping and we understand there are different extreme sports out there that can do just that — some are at sea level, while others are on or in the ocean, but have you thought about high altitude extreme attractions? In particular, have you added any of the extreme Colorado attractions at the Royal Gorge Bridge and Park to your bucket list?

If not, you should.

Here are three of the top altitude thrills at the Royal Gorge Bridge and Park that we think will have you itching for more.

  1. Royal Rush Skycoaster: Basically A Free Falling Roller Coaster

The main attraction at the Royal Gorge Bridge & Park has always been the bridge, but now there are additional adrenaline rush activities available.

People have started calling the skycoaster “the world’s scariest skycoaster.” On this ride, 1-3 people lay on their stomachs and are strapped together to soar through the air. Children are allowed on this ride but must be able to fit in a flight suit beforehand.  This is definitely an attraction not for the faint of heart!.

  1. Cloudscraper Zipline by ZipRider: A Colorado Zipline

With the Royal Rush Skycoaster so popular, the park started building new attractions taking advantage of the heights of the Royal Gorge,  they could introduce to not only the park but the state of Colorado. This adrenaline attraction wasn’t introduced until 2015.

This attraction was introduced when the park was rebuilding due to a wildfire that burnt the majority of the park in 2013, along with burning approximately 100 out of 1,292 planks of the famous bridge.

The park hosted a grand reopening in 2015 and introduced a new exhilarating zipline to the park and all of Colorado. Today, this zipline is one of Colorado’s #1 bucket lists experiences because visitors are able to fly 1,200 feet above the Arkansas River with the help of a few harnesses and braking systems.

This is definitely not an attraction for anyone who is scared of heights. There are some height and weight requirements, so make sure you review them before you plan your visit.

  1. Royal Gorge Via Ferrata:  A Colorado Rock Climbing Experience Of A Lifetime

Now for the newest adrenaline attraction — the Via Ferrata.

The Via Ferrata was opened last year to celebrate the park’s 90th anniversary and allow visitors to get a different perspective of the gorge walls while having a once in a lifetime experience.

Via Ferrata is a new experience for the Royal Gorge Bridge and Park, but its history dates back to WWI. Soldiers built and used this system as a way to traverse the mountainous terrain in a more direct and timely manner. Along with being used at the Royal Gorge as a Colorado attraction, it is also an experience used in the Swiss Alps and popular in Europe.

When you book a Via Ferrata excursion, you’re getting a once-in-a-lifetime experience.  During the Via Ferrata experience, climbers are guided up the sides of the ancient gorge walls where they are able to see a completely different perspective than the one they would get traditionally standing on the bridge.

The Royal Gorge Via Ferrata is a protected system using iron rungs and steel cables to keep the climber attached at all times.  There are beginner to expert routes so if you have ever thought about climbing, this may be the perfect experience for you.  Don’t worry about equipment,  helmets, shoes (in most sizes), and harnesses are provided  Recommended ages are 10 and up.

This is definitely an attraction that is made for the adrenaline junkies. Get an idea of what the Via Ferrata perspective looks like by visiting our website.
