Adventures in the Arkansas Region
The Royal Gorge region of Colorado is a picturesque location that is as thrilling as it is serene. Visitors may flock to the Royal Gorge Bridge for Instagram-worthy shots, but there is so much more to see and do! Soar through the air, traverse the rapids and conquer your fears as you discover the best in adventure tourism.
Whitewater Rafting
One of the top activities on the Arkansas River is whitewater rafting. If you’re up for a long adventure, book a full-day excursion. Do you want to have a taste of whitewater rafting without spending your whole day on the water? Book a half-day trip! Rapids range from Class II to V, so you are virtually guaranteed the excitement that whitewater rafting brings.
Whether you choose a half- or full-day excursion, you may see such areas as the Sledgehammer, El Segundo, the Narrows or the Wall Slammer. These whitewater rafting trips aren’t for the faint of heart. They are for anyone who wants to have a memorable and exhilarating vacation.
Skyline Drive
Skyline Drive is a leisurely way to take in views of Canon City and the Arkansas River Valley. The simple drive quickly gives way to a one-way road that reaches 800 feet in height. It has no guardrails despite the steep cliffs on each side.
You may choose to drive a car or take a Segway up the road. Whatever you do, make sure to take advantage of one of the overlooks. These offer you views that allow you to bask in the scenery and take a few photos for posterity. However, the city and valley views aren’t the only spots worth noting. Keep your eyes open for dinosaur tracks that are visible along Skyline Drive.
Were you hoping to hike rather than drive? You are in luck. Old Skyline Drive is a 1-mile hiking path that is perfect for anyone who wants to work up a sweat. Mountain biking is welcome at Old Skyline Drive as well.
Reaching New Heights
The highest zipline in the country is located at the South Rim of the Royal Gorge. The Cloudscraper Zipline is a 1,200-foot-high zipline that is open to visitors aged 10 and over. The zipline runs parallel to the Aerial Gondolas and the Royal Gorge Bridge. Photos and videos are taken of each trip, and you can purchase these once you reach the ground.
The Royal Rush SkyCoaster gives you access to views that were previously only seen through skydiving. The SkyCoaster, like the Cloudscraper, reaches a height of 1,200 feet. It also swings at speeds of up to 50 mph for a trip that is as electrifying as it is breathtaking.
Double your adventure and purchase both the Cloudscraper Zipline and the Royal Rush SkyCoaster as a combo ticket. General admission to the Royal Gorge Bridge is required.
