History of the Royal Gorge Bridge & Park, Cañon City
Long before any settlers arrived, today the land we call the Royal Gorge Region was home to the Uncompahgre Ute people. Then, Fremont County was organized in 1862 and the City of Cañon City was incorporated by 1872 by George Rockafellow. The Denver & Rio Grande Railroad ran its first trains through the Royal Gorge in 1880, then the population boom began! The Royal Gorge Bridge, which remains today as America’s Highest Suspension Bridge, was constructed in 1929. A team of about 80 brave men built the suspension bridge, wooden planks and all, in about 7 months from June to December. The bridge was an engineering feat of its time and was successfully constructed without any injuries or deaths. The Royal Gorge Bridge has never been part of any highway system. It was built specifically for the enjoyment of the natural scenery by those who come across it. Our region is special in the sense of history, innovation, and a strong community.
