Treat Your Family to A Colorado Springs Staycation Adventures at the Royal Gorge Bridge & Park in Colorado

Colorado Springs Staycation Adventures

This year has definitely been out of the ordinary. Colorado Springs Staycation Adventures

Unfortunately, America is still recovering from the global pandemic caused by COVID-19. With that being said, Americans are being told to be cautious when traveling, and international travel is definitely out of the question.

All the better reason to bring your family on a few staycation adventures — especially if you’re in the Colorado Springs, Colorado area.

One hour south of the Colorado Springs area lives one of Colorado’s must-see attractions, North America’s highest suspension bridge, along with fun rides for the whole family — the Royal Gorge Bridge and Park.

Here are a few activities that will make your Colorado Springs staycation adventures better than ever.

Visit and Learn All About the 91-Year Old Highest Suspension Bridge in America

When you and your family visit the Royal Gorge Bridge and Park, you will be able to walk across the entire bridge. Although this may sound like a little adventure, the bridge speaks for itself.

This 91-year-old suspension bridge was built in 1929 and held the title as “the highest  suspension bridge in the world” for a number of years. It only took seven months to build and towers over the Arkansas River with 1,292 wooden planks that make up its length.

When you visit the Royal Gorge Bridge and Park you and your family will also be able to visit the Plaza Theater that plays an educational video at the top of each hour. Here your family will be able to learn the ins and outs of the Royal Gorge Bridge, but the real activity on your family’s Colorado Springs staycation adventures list is being able to cross a bridge that was built in 1929.

Best Things to do in Colorado for the Fourth of July — Veteran Monster Truck Event & More at America’s Bridge

Best things to do in Colorado

As American’s, we know the story. Best Things To Do in Colorado for Memorial Day Weekend

On July 4th, 1776, the United States gained its independence from Great  Britain — therefore, America was born, and the Fourth of July is now observed as America’s Birthday.

Today, Americans continue to follow suit and celebrate the Fourth of July by hosting and/or attending American-themed parties for friends and family to commemorate another year of the United States’ independence.

Although this year has been anything but ordinary, we thankfully are able to celebrate the United States turning 244 years old outside of quarantine, but still six feet apart.

With that in mind, here are some of the best things to do in Colorado for Independence Day this year:

Witness An American Veteran, “The Veteran” Monster Truck at the Royal Gorge Bridge

This Fourth of July, we will be hosting “The Veteran” at the Royal Gorge Bridge and Park. “The Veteran” is a ten-foot-tall, ten thousand pound mega monster truck that pays tribute to all U.S. veterans.

Fourth of July is one of the most patriotic days out of the entire year for Americans. Come take some photographs and check out the largest veteran mega monster truck in the United States at the highest suspension bridge in America – it doesn’t get more patriotic than that.

Catch a Live Show — ( Live Music & Nature’s Educators)Best things to do in Colorado

Watch Juno the eagle spread his wings at the Plaza Theater when you catch the Birds of Prey Show by Nature’s Educators.  See other magnificent raptors such as Wicket the owl. Showtimes are at the top of each hour between 1-4 pm.

If you are in the mood for rock ‘n roll, the Elk Park Amphitheater features the Atomic Fireballs 12:30-4:30 pm, July 2-5. Seating is a large grassy knoll so bring a blanket or chairs, your snacks, and drinks and then settle in for a great afternoon of fun music.

Our Skycoaster is a thrilling experience where you will momentarily free fall 1,200 feet above the Arkansas River and then soar 50 mph through the air — this is a rush that is hard to duplicate. The Skycoaster holds up to three people that are 42”-82” tall. There is no weight restriction for this attraction, but there is a flight suit. Riders must fit into the flight suit in order to experience the Skycoaster.

America’s highest Zipline, the Cloudscraper by ZipRider, will allow you to fly parallel to America’s Bridge 1,200 feet above the Arkansas River. Race you to the other side!

The Royal Gorge Via Ferrata experience will allow you to scale the side of the gorge for a Royal Gorge Bridge and Park adventure unlike any other. These guided climbing tours are designed to be a challenge for all skill levels.

All in all, the Skycoaster, Cloudscraper, & Via Ferrata are definitely some of the best things to do in Colorado this Fourth of July.

3 High Altitude Thrills — Colorado Attractions at the Royal Gorge Bridge and Park

Extreme Colorado Attractions

Calling all adrenaline junkies!Extreme Colorado Attractions

The Royal Gorge Bridge has been around since 1929, and in 2003, the Royal Gorge Bridge introduced a free-falling attraction, where visitors were able to swing out over the edge of the gorge 1,200 feet above the Arkansas River — talk about an adrenaline rush.

We know you love activities that get your blood pumping and we understand there are different extreme sports out there that can do just that — some are at sea level, while others are on or in the ocean, but have you thought about high altitude extreme attractions? In particular, have you added any of the extreme Colorado attractions at the Royal Gorge Bridge and Park to your bucket list?

If not, you should.

Here are three of the top altitude thrills at the Royal Gorge Bridge and Park that we think will have you itching for more.

  1. Royal Rush Skycoaster: Basically A Free Falling Roller Coaster

The main attraction at the Royal Gorge Bridge & Park has always been the bridge, but now there are additional adrenaline rush activities available.

People have started calling the skycoaster “the world’s scariest skycoaster.” On this ride, 1-3 people lay on their stomachs and are strapped together to soar through the air. Children are allowed on this ride but must be able to fit in a flight suit beforehand.  This is definitely an attraction not for the faint of heart!.

Visit our website to view our other restrictions before you plan on experiencing this Colorado attraction.

  1. Cloudscraper Zipline by ZipRider: A Colorado Zipline

With the Royal Rush Skycoaster so popular, the park started building new attractions taking advantage of the heights of the Royal Gorge,  they could introduce to not only the park but the state of Colorado. This adrenaline attraction wasn’t introduced until 2015.

This attraction was introduced when the park was rebuilding due to a wildfire that burnt the majority of the park in 2013, along with burning approximately 100 out of 1,292 planks of the famous bridge.

The park hosted a grand reopening in 2015 and introduced a new exhilarating zipline to the park and all of Colorado. Today, this zipline is one of Colorado’s #1 bucket lists experiences because visitors are able to fly 1,200 feet above the Arkansas River with the help of a few harnesses and braking systems.

This is definitely not an attraction for anyone who is scared of heights. There are some height and weight requirements, so make sure you review them before you plan your visit.

  1. Royal Gorge Via Ferrata:  A Colorado Rock Climbing Experience Of A Lifetime

Now for the newest adrenaline attraction — the Via Ferrata.

The Via Ferrata was opened last year to celebrate the park’s 90th anniversary and allow visitors to get a different perspective of the gorge walls while having a once in a lifetime experience.

Via Ferrata is a new experience for the Royal Gorge Bridge and Park, but its history dates back to WWI. Soldiers built and used this system as a way to traverse the mountainous terrain in a more direct and timely manner. Along with being used at the Royal Gorge as a Colorado attraction, it is also an experience used in the Swiss Alps and popular in Europe.

When you book a Via Ferrata excursion, you’re getting a once-in-a-lifetime experience.  During the Via Ferrata experience, climbers are guided up the sides of the ancient gorge walls where they are able to see a completely different perspective than the one they would get traditionally standing on the bridge.

The Royal Gorge Via Ferrata is a protected system using iron rungs and steel cables to keep the climber attached at all times.  There are beginner to expert routes so if you have ever thought about climbing, this may be the perfect experience for you.  Don’t worry about equipment,  helmets, shoes (in most sizes), and harnesses are provided  Recommended ages are 10 and up.

This is definitely an attraction that is made for the adrenaline junkies. Get an idea of what the Via Ferrata perspective looks like by visiting our website.

Have You Started Adding These Attractions To Your Bucket List?

There you have it, when you add these three high altitude thrill attractions to your bucket list you’ll be experiencing more than an adrenaline rush, you’ll be experiencing once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

What are you waiting for? Which one of these attractions sounds like it would be your favorite? Stop waiting.

Buy your tickets and find out for yourself.

A Colorado Springs Adventure That is Also An Architectural Wonder — The Royal Gorge Bridge

A Historical Colorado Springs Adventure

In 1929, the world’s highest suspension bridge was constructed — The Royal Gorge Bridge.

Although the Royal Gorge Bridge may no longer hold that title, let’s think about where we were in terms of technology in 1929.

In 2020, a construction like this doesn’t seem that impressive. We now have the technology to construct buildings, bridges, spaceships, cars, and everything in between.

However, in 1929, the first flight around the world took place; scientists had virtually no idea what was beyond Earth, and the most common car people drove in was Henry Ford’s, Model T.

A Historical Colorado Springs Adventure

With all this being said, it really puts in perspective how amazing the construction of a 1,260-foot bridge over the Arkansas Bridge really is.

The Royal Gorge Bridge is located an hour south of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and is the perfect excursion for a Colorado Springs adventure.

Here are a few other fun historical facts about the Royal Gorge Bridge and Park.

What Makes The Royal Gorge Bridge, “America’s Bridge?”

As we just stated, the bridge was built in 1929, it has seen the majority of our country’s historical events. Beginning its longstanding history, the bridge was constructed with roughly 80 workers happy to have a job, right before the Great Depression hit.

The bridge utilized American workers and American ingenuity, which put the United States in the spotlight all around the world as having just built the world’s highest suspension bridge.

The bridge is 100% American, and it sits next to America’s Mountain — Pikes Peak.

It is America’s highest bridge today. With all of these long-standing connections to American history, the Royal Bridge is obviously “America’s Bridge.”

Construction Took Only A Few Months & It was Super Expensive  A Historical Colorado Springs Adventure

In fact, the Royal Gorge Bridge was built in seven months, and no serious injury or death occurred during the construction of the bridge.

This is particularly monumental because in today’s day and age, according to the experts the majority of construction projects are notoriously late and report many serious injuries.

Although the Royal Gorge Bridge was constructed quickly and safely, it was outrageously over budget — about $100,000 over budget, which today would equivocate to about $20 million dollars.

Whoa.

A Place That Participated In Hosting Records and Historical Happenings

Since the Royal Gorge Bridge’s opening, the bridge has hosted approximately 27 million visitors and experienced some of history’s most historically significant events.

Some of the historical events the bridge has experienced include the Great Depression, WWI & WWII, and many more.

Along with these historical events, it also hosted Franklin Roosevelt. Roosevelt claimed the bridge to be “one of the finest scenic spots in the whole of the United States.”

The wonderful thing about the Royal Gorge Bridge is you don’t need to be an extreme adventurer to enjoy the Royal Gorge Bridge. However, there have been several previous extreme events take place at the bridge before. Some of these things include presidential visits, a stage for several movies, movie star visits including John Wayne,  free rappelling records, jet pack flight, and more.

The experiences and events the bridge has hosted and been a part of, all come together to make it an architectural wonder.

What Are You Waiting For?

There’s no denying the amazing stories and history that is associated with the Royal Gorge Bridge. From the construction to the experience, and everything in between, the bridge is definitely an architectural wonder.

What are you waiting for? Have you chosen to make the Royal Gorge Bridge your next Colorado Springs adventure? Buy your tickets now and be part of the wonder.

Italian for “Iron Way,” Via Ferrata is a climbing system that dates back to World War I. Originally, soldiers used this method to get across mountain terrains. Now, it is considered a recreational activity.

A Via Ferrata consists of steel cables and iron rungs fixed into rock walls where guests secure themselves during this climbing experience. This cabling system provides a degree of ease and safety. So, even the most novice rock climbers and outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy this distinct rock climbing experience.

The walls of the gorge create a perfect environment for this attraction. Even participants with no rock climbing experience can enjoy the one-of-a-kind scenes from the Royal Gorge as a guide takes them through routes in the south rim of the gorge. From here, you will have views of the landscape that only a few others have ever seen.

The Via Ferrata guides are not only certified in first aid and CPR, but they are also High Angle Rescue trained. These experienced individuals will be with you every step of your tour. The park provides climbers with a harness, lanyard, shoes, helmet, and a small backpack if necessary. All tours begin with a short training session to prepare you for conquering the Via Ferrata.

The Via Ferrata is a memorable experience for any level of climbers, hikers, or adventurers. The Via Ferrata is available for anyone ages 10+ up and is not considered a short excursion as the paths take anywhere from 2.3-3 hours or 4.5-5 hours to complete depending on the type of tour you choose. While the Revelation Tour is a good choice for those new to Via Ferratas, the Royal Tour is geared toward active and experienced adventurers.  Reservations are not required to participate in either Via Ferrata tours, but they are highly recommended.

If you have wanted to scale granite walls but do not have the training, this is your opportunity to make it happen. The steep walls of the Royal Gorge make an ideal setting for this attraction and further enhance guest experiences.
