Colorado’s Mountain Majesty

Did you know several iconic attractions and destinations in Colorado are dubbed America’s best? Even the famous poem, “America,” which later was translated to one of our nation’s unofficial anthems, “America the Beautiful,” was written by the poet, Katharine Lee Bates, on her trip to Colorado? The poem is inspired by the natural scenery found across the Centennial State, from the plains to the mountains. To celebrate Independence Day, here are five places in Colorado that reflect the best icons of our nation:

Places in Colorado that Reflect the USA

America’s Mountain – Colorado Springs

Pikes Peak is a 14,115-foot mountain found along the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado Springs. During her visit to the famous mountain peak in 1893, professor and poet Katharine Lee Bates wrote the poem entitled “America.” She stood atop the summit of Pikes Peak, one of Colorado’s most famous 14ers, and composed the words to what would become one of the most famous American poems in history. The poem later became one of the most recognized songs in the United States of America. One hundred years after Bates wrote the patriotic poem, Colorado Springs businessman Costas Rombocos gifted an “America the Beautiful” monument that was established at the summit of Pikes Peak. Celebrate our beautiful lands this 4th of July in Colorado with a piece of national history at Pikes Peak. View the monument with the lyrics to the poem and take in the breathtaking views of Colorado and beyond on America’s Mountain.

America the Beautiful Park – Colorado Springs
