Royal Gorge Via Ferrata — Great for All Climbers Including Those Who Don’t Have Any Rock-Climbing Experience

Located in Canon City, Colorado, the Royal Gorge Bridge and Park is a natural attraction among the clouds. The bridge, centerpiece of this aerial playground, previously held the title of the highest suspension bridge in the world. Crossing the gorge 956 feet above the Arkansas River, it is the highest bridge in the United States. Yet this is one feature among many in a unique park.

 Romping Through the Air

If you have ever wanted to walk in the clouds the Royal Gorge Bridge and Park is a dream come true.

Other activities at the Royal Gorge Bridge and Park include:

  • Aerial gondolas for a leisurely view of the mountains
  • America’s highest zip line 1,200 feet in the sky
  • A Skycoaster with a 50 mph free fall
  • And a visitor center to watch daredevils while shopping or stopping for a bite to eat.

The newest attraction at the park isn’t a ride, The Royal Gorge Via Ferrata allows you to get up close and personal with the gorge itself.

Royal Gorge Via Ferrata

Italian for “Iron Way,” Via Ferrata is a climbing system that dates back to World War I. Originally, soldiers used this method to get across mountain terrains. Now, it is considered a recreational activity.

A Via Ferrata consists of steel cables and iron rungs fixed into rock walls where guests secure themselves during this climbing experience. This cabling system provides a degree of ease and safety. So, even the most novice rock climbers and outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy this distinct rock climbing experience.

The walls of the gorge create a perfect environment for this attraction. Even participants with no rock climbing experience can enjoy the one-of-a-kind scenes from the Royal Gorge as a guide takes them through routes in the south rim of the gorge. From here, you will have views of the landscape that only a few others have ever seen.

The Via Ferrata guides are not only certified in first aid and CPR, but they are also High Angle Rescue trained. These experienced individuals will be with you every step of your tour. The park provides climbers with a harness, lanyard, shoes, helmet, and a small backpack if necessary. All tours begin with a short training session to prepare you for conquering the Via Ferrata.

The Via Ferrata is a memorable experience for any level of climbers, hikers, or adventurers. The Via Ferrata is available for anyone ages 10+ up and is not considered a short excursion as the paths take anywhere from 2.3-3 hours or 4.5-5 hours to complete depending on the type of tour you choose. While the Revelation Tour is a good choice for those new to Via Ferratas, the Royal Tour is geared toward active and experienced adventurers.  Reservations are not required to participate in either Via Ferrata tours, but they are highly recommended.

If you have wanted to scale granite walls but do not have the training, this is your opportunity to make it happen. The steep walls of the Royal Gorge make an ideal setting for this attraction and further enhance guest experiences.

If you are looking for one of the most unique places to climb in Colorado, Via Ferrata at the Royal Gorge Bridge and Park will deliver.
